SS-31
What is SS-31?
SS-31, also known as Bendavia, is a novel peptide compound with potential therapeutic applications. It is a member of a class of compounds called mitochondria-targeted peptides, which are designed to selectively accumulate within mitochondria, the cellular organelles responsible for producing energy. SS-31 specifically targets the inner mitochondrial membrane.
SS-31 is believed to exert its effects by stabilizing the structure and function of mitochondria, particularly under conditions of stress or injury. It has been studied for its potential benefits in various medical conditions characterized by mitochondrial dysfunction, oxidative stress, and inflammation, including cardiovascular diseases, neurodegenerative disorders, and metabolic disorders.
How does SS-31 work?
SS-31 is believed to exert its protective effects through several mechanisms:
1. Stabilization of mitochondrial membranes: SS-31 binds to cardiolipin, a phospholipid found in the inner mitochondrial membrane, and helps maintain its structural integrity. By stabilizing cardiolipin, SS-31 protects against damage to mitochondrial membranes, which can occur due to oxidative stress, inflammation, or other harmful factors.
2. Reduction of oxidative stress: Mitochondria are a major source of reactive oxygen species (ROS), which can cause oxidative damage to cellular components. SS-31 has potent antioxidant properties and can scavenge ROS within mitochondria, reducing oxidative stress and preventing damage to mitochondrial DNA, proteins, and lipids.
3. Preservation of mitochondrial function: SS-31 helps maintain the function of the electron transport chain, the series of protein complexes responsible for generating ATP, the cell’s primary energy source. By supporting electron transport and ATP production, SS-31 ensures that cells have an adequate supply of energy to carry out their essential functions.
4. Anti-inflammatory effects: SS-31 has been shown to possess anti-inflammatory properties by inhibiting the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines and signaling pathways involved in inflammatory responses. By reducing inflammation, SS-31 may help protect mitochondria from damage caused by inflammatory mediators.
The primary mechanism of action of SS-31 involves stabilizing mitochondrial membranes and preserving mitochondrial function, particularly under conditions of stress or injury. Mitochondria play a crucial role in cellular energy production, and maintaining their structural integrity and function is essential for overall cellular health.
Indications of SS-31:
- More energy
- Improve health span and lifespan
- Fat loss
- Grater resistance to metabolic stress
What you need to know:
Mitochondrial disease can greatly impact one’s health by negatively affecting almost any part of the body. Health concerns with mitochondrial disease include fatigue, diabetes mellitus, impairment of hearing and vision, weakness, metabolic strokes, seizures, cardiomyopathy, arrhythmias, developmental or cognitive disabilities, liver, gastrointestinal disorders, liver and kidney disease, and more. Many of these conditions can lead to secondary mitochondrial dysfunction and affect other diseases.
